The Story of the Peace Garden
Mattie J.T. Stepanek envisioned a world at peace. He shared his message through poetry he termed "Heartsongs," which are published in seven books that extend hope to people of all ages. One of Mattie's books, Just Peace, was co-authored with former President Jimmy Carter. Of Mattie and his message of Peace, Jimmy Carter writes, "These words of wisdom and inspiration came from the most remarkable person I have ever known."
Only three weeks away from his fourteenth birthday when his life was ended by a rare form
of muscular dystrophy, Mattie J.T. Stepanek knew more about reaching life goals, enduring
physical suffering, and living your personal beliefs than most grown adults. The challenges
he lived with only seemed to make stronger his resolve, enthusiasm, and spirit. As a poet,
peacemaker, philosopher, friend, and ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Mattie
made an immeasurable impact on the world in his lifetime. "From the moment I met Mattie Stepanek,
I knew it was my privilege that this courageous little boy had drifted into my life," Oprah said.
It was Slater Associates' privledge to participate in this project and face the design challenge of creating from Mattie's words, thoughts, and Message of Peace, the physical reality of a Peace Garden that would commemorate Mattie's philosophies showcase a commissioned statue of Mattie and tell his story. Our design team collaborated with Mattie's mother, Jeni Stepanek, City of Rockville and Park and Recreation officials, and artist and sculptor Jimilu Mason to create Mattie's Peace Garden. The Peace Garden is located inside the 26-acre Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park in Rockville, Maryland.
