Design Challenge

Physical Site Constraints

With a 12 ft. difference in grade between the upper entrances to the site and the lower entrance to the classroom
building, the main challenge was to ensure that the space be ADA accessible on at least one pathway.

Issues of Use and Functionality

The existing amphitheater's unweildy size and spartan feel had rendered it an uncomfortable space,
largely un-usable by the college community.

Environmental Characteristics

The empty space and excess of hard surfaces amplified noise which became disruptive to the classes taking
place in the adjacent building, and also to anyone walking or sitting near the amphitheater.
